The legend of Saint Valentine is shrouded in mystery. (Much like the legend of Melon & Hatt, come to think of it.) Parts of his story are acknowledged as fact ; others are still the subject of speculation, over 1300 years after the priest's death.
Whatever he did or did not do, whoever he loved or did not love, the unfortunate bishop was beaten, stoned and then decapitated (this seems a bit harsh) on February 14th, 270 for his refusal to obey the Emperor Claudius II and renounce his faith. He is reputed to have signed his last letter - a note to a young woman who was either his lover or his pupil, or both, depending on who you believe - "From your Valentine", thereby guaranteeing himself immortality (and allowing countless lovers through the ages to score points without having to endure the messy business of being condemned to death and beheaded first).
But I digress. What is relevant at present (and very good indeed) is that Melon & Hatt will be together on St Valentine's Day 2008, despite that prospect initially looking unlikely (thanks, Lovemore). What will they be doing? Well, maybe that's another story for another day.
To be continued...
